Tar was once a thriving agro-pastoralist village where each household had their own 50 or 60 “ralug” (sheep and goats). The village had families and approximately 80 individuals, most of whom were allied to government jobs with the tourism industry. During the short summer months and early autumn, a few travellers comes and stay with the families to experience the traditional Ladakhi lifestyle and way of life. The village is a contrast from most of the villages of Ladakh, a village with no road connectivity, but it has minimised the influence of modernity and maintained cultural and traditional ethnicity. Now, due to urbanisation and a lack of connectivity to the outer world, most of the people have left the village for their survival.
Currently, Tar Village can accommodate a maximum of 20 guests per day, with equal distribution among the homestays. We do not have any guest houses, hotels, or resorts; only farmstay accommodations are available for visitors. The charges vary depending on the duration of the guest’s stay.
