Tar Village

JULLAY

Welcome to Tar Village

Tar Village was a thriving agro-pastoralist village where eighty people (about twelve families) worked together to take hundreds of ralug (sheep and goats) to the mountains, and grow all of their barley, wheat, apricots, and vegetables each year.
Now, due to urbanization, most villagers live full-time outside of Tar. Only about 15 full-time residents maintain the fields and cows and trees that have sustained generations in these beautiful narrow mountain valleys.
During the short summer months and early autumn, a few travellers comes and stay with the families to experience the traditional Ladakhi lifestyle and way of life.
The village is a contrast from most of the villages of Ladakh, a village with no road connectivity. However, this condition has minimized the influence of modernity and maintained cultural and traditional ethnicity.

We strive to provide excellent and authentic guest and volunteer experiences in Tar Village. We are using this culturally sensitive tourism, along with the practice of agriculture and the continuing development of infrastructure and youth programs, to increase the feasibility of livelihoods in Tar for its people.
